What Are Veneers?
Dental veneers are thin, strong porcelain shells that are custom-crafted to repair a variety of cosmetic imperfections. They’re shaped to cover the visible front surface of damaged teeth to reveal a symmetrical, full, bright, confidence-boosting smile. Patients who are looking to fix the following issues are typically good candidates:
- Chipped teeth
- Cracked teeth
- Minor misalignment issues
- Misshapen teeth
- Severely stained or discolored teeth
- Worn-down teeth
Whether you suffer from one or all of these problems, Dr. Cannon, your cosmetic dentist in Sparta, can help. With her eye for artistry and attention to detail, she can beautify your grin and make your porcelain veneers virtually indistinguishable from the rest of your teeth.
Benefits of Veneers
Porcelain veneers offer more than just a natural-looking solution to concealing cosmetic flaws. They give patients several benefits, including:
- Strength and durability that can withstand everyday wear and tear.
- Stain-resistance, so they don’t get easily discolored by certain foods and drinks.
- Gentle on the gums and oral tissues, meaning you won’t have to deal with any type of irritation.
- An average lifespan of 10 to 15 years with the proper care.
The first step to take towards improving the appearance of your smile is to schedule a consultation by contacting our office. We’ll walk you through a custom-tailored treatment plan made specially for you and answer any questions you may have.
The Procedure of Getting Veneers
During your consultation, Dr. Cannon will examine the health of your teeth and gums and give you all the information you need to decide whether porcelain veneers are a good choice for you. We will then prepare the damaged teeth that you’d like to have repaired by removing a thin layer of enamel. This is to compensate for the thickness of the veneers, allowing them to lay flush with your other teeth and not protrude from your mouth. Dr. Cannon will take impressions of each of the teeth that will be receiving veneers to model the shells after.
Once your veneers have been made, we’ll call you in for your final appointment. Using a special cement, Dr. Cannon will carefully and strategically adhere each veneer to your individual teeth. Once all of them have been placed, she’ll wipe away any excess product in your mouth and polish your smile.
Lumineers vs. Veneers
Traditional porcelain veneers involve placing extremely thin ceramic coverings over the front of the teeth in order to improve someone’s appearance. With them, a patient can enhance the shape, size, color, spacing, and just about every aspect of their teeth all at once. Typically, a small amount of enamel has to be removed so that someone’s veneers will lay completely flat and look natural.
Lumineers, on the other hand, are a type of veneer that is so thin that this initial step isn’t necessary. They allow a patient to dramatically transform their look without actually altering their teeth in the slightest, making for a more conservative treatment that is still able to deliver gorgeous results.
Understanding the Cost of Veneers
Whether it’s veneers or any other cosmetic treatment, you really do get what you pay for. Cosmetic dentistry should really be seen as a personal investment in the long-term appearance of your smile, especially when you want it to really look like one a movie star might have! Of course, that doesn’t mean you necessarily have to choose the most expensive dental treatment we offer.
Weighing Costs vs. The Right Treatment for You
There are many dental treatments for you to choose from, making the smile makeover process that much more customizable and personalized. Consider the following treatments, their costs, and the pros and cons of each ahead of your next appointment:
- Invisalign – While they can straighten teeth in a fraction of the time compared to metal braces and do so without changing your smile’s appearance, they are really only meant for mild to moderate levels of misalignment, crowding, gaps, or uneven bites. They can cost as much as $5,000 on average and don’t address the color or shape of your teeth.
- Cosmetic Dental Bonding – Considered to be one of the cheaper options available for correcting stains, chips, and cracks in teeth, cosmetic dental bonding only lasts for so long before needing touch-ups. In some cases, you may need it redone every few years depending on how well you take care of your smile at home.
- Teeth Whitening – Whether you want to whiten teeth in a single appointment at our office or use take-home solutions for the on-the-go treatment, it’s widely popular thanks to its affordability and effectiveness. However, chips, cracks, and the overall shape of your teeth will require other treatments.
- Veneers – Veneers are a high-end cosmetic treatment, but their natural esthetics and longevity make them well worth it. Not only can you completely transform your smile, but it’s often the only treatment necessary to satisfy all your cosmetic needs.
How to Make Veneers Affordable
Veneers are largely considered a cosmetic-only treatment, meaning you’ll need to consider options outside of dental insurance if you don’t plan to pay for treatment out-of-pocket. Thankfully, our office is happy to offer multiple methods to make that possible. For starters, CareCredit allows you to pay for treatments over the span of several months, typically with little to no interest attached to your payments.
Additionally, Gentle Dentistry Sparta provides a VIP Membership Plan that guarantees discounts on basic and major services. This can help you put money saved on preventive care towards cosmetic treatments like veneers. We also provide a free smile makeover consultation and $500 credit towards an accepted treatment plan, which can be read about in more detail here.

Veneers FAQs
At Gentle Dentistry Sparta, veneers are one of our most popular cosmetic services, and it’s not hard to see why. Because they can effectively conceal most aesthetic imperfections, they are perhaps the most versatile cosmetic dentistry treatment currently available. That said, it’s perfectly normal to have a few questions before beginning the procedure. For your convenience, we’ve included the answers to a few veneers FAQs in Sparta below.
How Are Veneers Different from Dental Crowns?
Veneers and crowns are both dental restorations that cover a section of a tooth and improve its appearance. A dental crown, however, fits over the entire part of a tooth that is visible above the gums. A veneer, on the other hand, is only cemented onto the front part of the tooth that other people can see. Because veneers cover less surface area, they require less enamel removal than crowns.
Can I Still Get Cavities If I Have Veneers?
Yes. Veneers cover the front-facing surface of a tooth and make most cosmetic flaws disappear, but they do not make the tooth immune to decay. You’ll still need to take the proper oral hygiene precautions to minimize your risk of developing cavities.
Do Veneers Require Any Special Care?
For the most part, you can take care of teeth that have veneers in the same way as any other tooth. Brushing, flossing, and rinsing with mouthwash at home every day should prevent bacteria and plaque from building up and harming your pearly whites. You should also wear a mouthguard if you play contact sports and a nightguard if you have a habit of grinding your teeth while you sleep. Lastly, be sure to visit us twice a year for a routine checkup and cleaning. That way, if there are any problems with your veneers, we can catch and treat them early on.
Does Getting Veneers Hurt?
To place traditional veneers, we’d have to remove a thin sliver of enamel from the affected teeth. While this may sound painful, we’ll make sure to numb your mouth beforehand. The procedure itself shouldn’t hurt, but your mouth may feel slightly sore for a day or two afterward.
Whether you chose traditional veneers or Lumineers, the placement procedure should also not hurt. Again, you might experience some minor discomfort for the next couple of days, especially if you received a large number of veneers, but it’s nothing that an over-the-counter pain reliever shouldn’t fix.
Are There Any Foods I Can’t Eat with Veneers?
Unlike braces, veneers can correct crooked teeth without coming with a laundry list of foods you shouldn’t eat. Veneers should not require you to change your diet. The only thing to keep in mind is that chewing on certain very hard items, like ice, pens, or popcorn kernels, could cause your veneers to chip or break. However, veneers are quite durable, so this should be a rare occurrence.
Are Veneers Permanent?
A set of veneers will not last forever. However, this treatment is considered to be permanent due to the fact that it is irreversible. During the veneers treatment process, a bit of tooth enamel must be removed. That enamel will never grow back on its own, and without it, your teeth will be extra-sensitive to outside stimuli. They may also have an unusual appearance. Veneers or another type of restoration will always be necessary to protect your teeth.
You should not let the long-term nature of veneers scare you. Many patients have no regrets about committing to their new smile.
Will I Still Be Able to Drink Coffee with Veneers?
Yes, you can still drink coffee with veneers. They are constructed out of a nonporous porcelain material, so pigments tend to slide off of them. In other words, they are highly resistant to stains!
However, it is important to keep in mind that veneers are not totally stain-proof. They can become discolored over time if you regularly overindulge in dark beverages, including things like coffee and black tea. Be sure to drink such items only in moderation. You can minimize their staining potential by enjoying them through a straw.
Can Veneers Be Used for Bite Corrections?
Veneers cannot change the position of your teeth or jaws, so they cannot be used to correct your bite or other orthodontic problems.
However, in some mild cases, veneers can disguise such issues. For example, they can hide small gaps between the teeth or make an open bite disappear by making the teeth appear longer. Usually, this is only an option for patients whose orthodontic issues are purely cosmetic and are not posing a threat to their oral health.
How Long Do Veneers Last?
The lifespan of veneers can vary. One study from 2007 found that 74% of veneers lasted 15 – 16 years, while 91% lasted 12 – 13 years. A separate study conducted in 2012 found that 83% of veneers lasted 20 years. In some instances, veneers can last for 30 years or longer.
How long your veneers last will depend largely on how well you care for them. Excellent oral hygiene habits, regular dental visits, a reasonable diet, and other measures can reduce the risk of damage and help them to endure for the long haul.
How Many Veneers Will I Need?
The goal of veneers is to hide aesthetic imperfections in teeth in a manner that is both attractive and natural-looking. Some patients need just one veneer to hide a particularly bothersome tooth. Others, though, need a full set of 6 – 8 veneers to cover all of their upper teeth that are visible when they smile. In some cases, an individual might even choose to get veneers for their lower teeth as well.
During your consultation, we will learn about your goals and plan your treatment accordingly.
