Though your Invisalign trays are designed to fit securely to your teeth, there are times when they may not fit quite right. If this happens, don’t panic. Here are a few things you can do to ensure that they stay in place until it’s time to switch to a new pair.
Try a Chewie
One of the first things you should do when your aligners aren’t fitting properly is to try an Invisalign Chewie. These are reusable plastic sticks that you can bite down on as you’re putting on your aligners to help push them into place. To use, just bite down starting from the back of your arch, slowly sliding them forward and repeating until the entire aligner is in place.
Go Back to Your Old Aligners
If your Chewie doesn’t help, it could be worth it to try switching back to your most recent set of aligners but check with your dentist first. If you find this happening frequently, you may not be wearing your aligners enough, so be sure to keep them on for at least 22 hours a day and be sure to do your bite exercises if prescribed.
Do Your Bite Exercises
Your dentist may have prescribed bite exercises to help encourage your teeth to move during treatment. This is because though your back teeth benefit from the pressure in your mouth that’s caused by chewing and speaking, the front ones take a little longer to move because they aren’t used as frequently. These exercises help make up for this so it’s easier for your entire arch to move in tandem.
Other Causes…
If none of these tips help you get a better fit, your aligners themselves could be damaged. Make sure you never use them to eat or drink unless you’re drinking cold or room-temperature water. Never wash them in hot water, as this can cause the plastic to melt. If you still are having difficulty getting a good fit, speak to your dentist as soon as possible.
Remember, your Invisalign aligners should fit securely to your teeth. If they aren’t, you may need to try these additional steps to get a better hold.
