Invisalign is a comfortable and discreet solution to fix bite and alignment problems. Not only will you enjoy a less noticeable treatment, but you won’t have to deal with the hassle of metal braces. Although there are no brackets and wires to clean around, commit to brushing and flossing after every meal. Here’s why you shouldn’t skip flossing, even if it feels like a chore.

Importance of Flossing with Invisalign

Food particles and plaque can get trapped between your aligners and enamel, increasing your risk of various issues. Although brushing is effective at removing debris and plaque, your toothbrush can’t reach everywhere. Brushing alone can leave up to 40% of your teeth surfaces uncleaned. Flossing is the only way to remove the buildup your toothbrush can’t reach. Here’s why it’s important to floss your teeth throughout the day:

  • Prevent Tooth Decay: Trapped food residue can erode your enamel over time. No amount of brushing can reverse tooth decay.
  • Keep Your Gums Healthy: Flossing is the best way to prevent gum disease, which affects at least 50% of adults in the US. Your risk of gum disease can increase when wearing Invisalign if you aren’t keeping your mouth clean.
  • Avoid Unwanted Odors: Bacteria and plaque can cause your aligners to develop unwanted odors.
  • Protect Against Stains: Poor oral hygiene habits can cause your aligners to discolor, losing their discrete appearance.

Since there aren’t any brackets or wires to clean around, your flossing routine is virtually unchanged. After removing your aligners and brushing your teeth for two full minutes, use dental floss to clean between each tooth. If you prefer, you can also use a waterflosser to clean hard-to-reach places.

Don’t Forget Your Dental Checkup

In addition to complying with your treatment plan and keeping your mouth clean at home, don’t forget to see your dentist for a cleaning and checkup every 6 months. Your dentist will monitor your dental health for any changes to ensure there aren’t any complications while benefiting from Invisalign.
