Veneers are a simple, effective cosmetic treatment that can give you the smile of your dreams. Within just two appointments, you can leave the dentist’s office with a completely different set of teeth than what you walked in with.
That can be a little bit hard to believe for some people. If you’re curious about this procedure, here’s what your dentist will do to fit you for veneers, step-by-step.
Step 1: Consultation
The first thing you’ll do is talk to your dentist about what exactly it is you’re looking for. You’ll cover which teeth you want to be treated, what problems you want to be fixed, and what color you want your veneers to be. If you’re looking to get back to a smile you had when you were younger, it may be helpful to bring in older pictures of yourself.
Step 2: Modeling
Your dentist will make a model of your teeth, and then use wax to mockup exactly what you want your new smile to look like. Your dentist might also use plastic to create a set of temporary veneers that can go over your teeth. They’ll attach them using weak cement, which will give you the opportunity to check with friends and family about the quality of your smile.
Step 3: Preparation
Once you’ve settled on what you want your smile to look like, your dentist will prepare your teeth for your permanent veneers. This will usually involve trimming a little bit of enamel to make room for the veneers. They’ll usually have you wear a set of temporaries until your next appointment in order to protect your teeth.
Step 4: Lab
Your dentist will take an impression of your prepared teeth and send them, along with designs for your veneers, to a lab to be produced. The process will take a few weeks to complete. During that time you’ll be wearing your temporary veneers, which will give you additional time to figure out what you do and do not like. You can send these notes to your dentist, who will pass them on to the lab.
Step 5: Cement
When the veneers are complete, you’ll come into the office for your final appointment. Your dentist will prepare your teeth with a mild acidic solution and then attach the veneers with a cement strong enough to last for up to a decade.
After that, you’re done! You’ll leave the dentist’s office after that last appointment with a smile you can have confidence in. Only you and your dentist will know about the careful planning that made it so beautiful.
